Today’s Australian (January 19) has an article by Nicolas Rothwell entitled “How the West was won over,” on the reaction in Europe to John Mawurndjul’s retrospective at the Museum Tinguely in Basel (and now at Sprengel in Hannover). Thanks to Glenn for the tipoff on the article. Also, if you haven’t visited the Tinguely’s website for the exhibition itself, you should do so right away. There are fourteen reproductions of Mawurndjul’s work, arranged chronologically from 1979 to 2005. From the main page, scroll to the bottom and click on the link that says “Download Press Photos.” This will take you to the page of thumbnails. For each image, click on the “download” link. This will not actually download the larger image to your local disk, but it will present the very large, very beautiful, and very detailed reproduction of the painting. There are also a few reproductions of early barks from the region, photos of Mawurndjul painting, and the artist in his country at Milmilngkan.
